High Roller Penny Guide

Getting Started in High Roller Penny

Quick answer

Learn that pegs can be moved before you launch, pick one launch force and keep it, meet the stage goal, then spend tickets on zone upgrades and More Moves. That clears most of the demo's early ladder.

High Roller Penny is a pachinko roguelike: you drop balls down a pegboard, every peg hit scores, and you have to beat a score goal (quota) each stage or get "executed". The free demo is out now and it is the whole game right now — so this guide covers exactly what the demo explains badly: your first run, the controls, and what to do with tickets.

High Roller Penny stage intro — Leona's first appearance with the stage goals

Your first run, step by step

  1. Start a run and read the goal. Each stage shows a score goal before you play. The intro stages use modest goals (the demo shows 500 / 750 / 1000 on early stage cards), and later "High Roller" rounds raise it hard — one settlement screen shows a GOAL of 8,000.
  2. Place your pieces. Before launching, you can move the special pieces (pegs) around the board. New players miss this constantly — the in-game tutorial mentions it only in passing. Moving pieces is central, not cosmetic.
  3. Launch the ball. A ball drops from the top and bounces through the pegs. Every peg hit adds points; chains of hits build combos that multiply what a single drop is worth.
  4. Watch the bottom row. The score zones at the bottom of the board apply multipliers to the ball's total when it lands — including White −50% zones that halve your whole score. They are the number one complaint in the demo for a reason.
  5. Spend your tickets in the shop. Between rounds you buy new pieces, ball upgrades and utility tickets. If a stage looks unplayable, reroll or rebuild — everything you own can be sold back.

Controls and the one trick that matters

Mouse only for now (no controller support yet — the developers confirmed it is planned). SPACE launches, 1 / E nudge the speed setting, and you drag pieces while the board is stopped.

What the demo actually contains

The demo (released September 28, 2026) is not a slice of a tutorial — it is a runnable version of the core loop: multiple stage types, a shop, boss fights against bunny girls, and an ending. According to the official launch post, highlights include:

  • Balls in four flavors — big, small, Bowling Balls and Bouncy Balls.
  • Special board pieces — Blue pieces, Shockwave Pegs, Cloner Pegs (they duplicate balls) and Jump Springs (they fling balls skyward).
  • A full opponent — Leona, the demo's featured bunny girl, waits at the end of the early ladder with a 500 HP score bar.

What to do if you are stuck

ProblemFix
"I didn't know I could move pegs"Pause before launching — the pre-launch phase is the board-building phase
Losing runs to one −50% zoneSell junk and buy zone-upgrade tickets when offered; the September 29 hotfix also replaced one White zone with a Yellow (+0%) zone
Ball got stuck between pegsKnown issue reported on the Steam forums; if it happens, wait a moment or restart the round
Score explodes then diesYou likely hit your goal early — remember the stage ends when the quota is met, so stop spending balls once you are over
